The two electronic music works on the present album strive, each in its own way, to revisit and recreate the foundations of digital sound.
The two Pocket Electronic Symphonies, nr 1 (2017) and nr 2 (2020), are symphonies for a solo performer on a smartphone. Both symphonies are written as sound generating software which acts both as the score and the musical instrument. Using this software on their mobile phone, the performer, by changing the parameters of numerous sound generation processes, navigates the successions of massive chords of synthesized sound and builds towering climaxes and suspenseful calm sections. Both works strive to create a new kind of symphonic sound for the mobile age and to find new space for passionate, dramatic and grand musical expression.
Symphony nr. 1 explores autonomous sound-generating processes involving many dynamically created sound generators. Parameters of sound, like pitch, time, envelope, volume and the like are also subject to different autonomous processes which the player turns on and off in different combinations, driving the sound flow. Microtonal chords clash, creating multi-layered noise with different textures. The First Symphony has been performed a number of times, most notably at ISCM World Music Days 2019 in Tallinn, Estonia, by Estonian electronic music performer Doris Hallmägi. Symphony nr. 2 develops the ideas from Symphony nr 1 further in a different direction, shifting focus towards more gradual changes in volume, sound density, harmony and sound texture.
On this recording, both works are performed by the composer.
